Magic Ex Libris: Book Two

It’s hard when the beginning of a series comes on strong, like a locomotive, for a reader to decide if the second story is just as good. Well, wonder no more, this novel is even better! Tight action, great descriptions, and excellent conversations aid in making this tale better than the first.

Isaac Vainio’s life is complicated with two women in his life: his ex-psychiatrist Porter Nidhi Shah, and Lena Greenwood: a dryad. And that’s not including his part-time job as a librarian and is able to practice libromancy as a Porter! It gets even more complicated a couple of werewolves discover a dead wendingo.

Soon after a bunch of metal insects attack Isaac and Lena’s tree, they realize these insects aren’t coming out and are causing damage to Lena. With one thing and then another, they discover the insects are coming from August Harrison, a bitter, vicious man. To make it worse, Harrison discovered the Bi Sheng de du zhe, ancient Chinese who pulled themselves into books and had assigned readers to bring them back out. The battle quickly gets worse, so Gutenberg and other Porters come to their aid.

“Codex Reborn” is a very captivating novel from start to finish. I protested bitterly about the ending, but it seems to make the next book more intriguing as a result. Already I’m eagerly looking forward to the next book to find out what does happen to Isaac. This was one of the best science fiction novels I’ve read this year. It’s a real treat to read such an action-packed novel with a lot of intrigue as this one.

Book Blurb for Codex Born

Five hundred years ago, Johannes Gutenberg discovered the art of libriomancy, allowing him to reach into books to create things from their pages. Gutenberg’s power brought him many enemies, and some of those enemies have waited centuries for revenge. Revenge which begins with the brutal slaughter of a wendigo in the northern Michigan town of Tamarack, a long-established werewolf territory.

Libriomancer Isaac Vainio is part of Die Zwelf Portenære, better known as the Porters, the organization founded by Gutenberg to protect the world from magical threats. Isaac is called in to investigate the killing, along with Porter psychiatrist Nidhi Shah and their dryad bodyguard and lover, Lena Greenwood. Born decades ago from the pages of a pulp fantasy novel, Lena was created to be the ultimate fantasy woman, strong and deadly, but shaped by the needs and desires of her companions. Her powers are unique, and Gutenberg’s enemies hope to use those powers for themselves. But their plan could unleash a far darker evil
