Korsak Brothers, #2

Rob Thurman's Basilisk is the sequel to her mesmerizing tale of the Korsak brothers, Chimera. Stefan rescued his kidnapped younger brother Lukas (who prefers to be called Michael or Misha) after ten years of captivity with a madman who fostered unusual capabilities in the children that he was training. The two brothers have spent the ensuing three years living a low profile away from the Mafiya heritage that their father was such a big part of and Michael has continued using his advanced intellect to hone his skills. Their peaceful lives come to an abrupt end when they discover that a mysterious man named Raynor is hunting them and he has the resources of the U.S. government at his disposal as he forces them to leave the first home that Michael has ever known while they seek to free the remaining imprisoned children at the Institute. Michael has been seeking a "cure" for the chimera abilities but knows that some of his former comrades are beyond redemption but he never suspects what he will find when they do reach the Institute. An internet companion that he has been consulting plays a greater role than he expects as a desperate race to find the children from the Institute becomes an attempt to prevent wholesale slaughter using only the skills and resources that Stefan, Misha and the sometimes abrasive Saul can bring to the fight. The question is, will that be enough?

Thurman still has her amazing ability to create a dark paranormal story filled with uncomfortable situations foisted upon charismatic but tortured people. The deep and abiding love between Stefan and Michael which persists despite the startling revelations of the previous novel is an essential counterpoint to the traumatic experiences that they undergo during the course of the story. Admittedly not a tale for the weak-stomached, there is the reluctant fascination for whatever those who rubberneck at car accidents are attracted to that keeps one reading past the gory scenes. Another great read and I add my wishes for a speedy recovery for Ms. Thurman and encourage fans to show their support by picking up a copy of this and her other fascinating books.
