The Martian

When astronaut Mark Watney is left behind by his fellow crew members during a severe wind storm on Mars, they think he’s dead and decide to abort the mission. They head back to Earth only to eventually find out that Mark is very much alive. Through much ingenuity and a strong survival attitude, Mark works with NASA to assist in getting him home again. Unfortunately, the preparation to work at getting him home isn’t a very easy task to accomplish for either Mark or NASA. Are they finally able to bring him home again? Or does he die on Mars before they reach him?

This was a fabulous Sci-Fi Suspense novel that literally had me sitting on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t even imagine being stranded on Mars by your fellow crew members because they think you’re dead. I don’t know why they wouldn’t have tried at least bringing Mark back to Earth with them, whether he was alive or deceased. I loved reading his journal entries and seeing what kind of frame of mind he was in throughout this whole ordeal. Clearly, Mark was a survivor and I was rooting for him the entire time I was reading. I even loved his sense of humor and feel that this was one aspect that helped him get through the day-to-day issues he was faced with. If you’re looking for a great novel that will pull you into the storyline from the very first sentence, then look no further. This is one book that I highly recommend! Great job, Mr. Weir!

Book Blurb for The Martian

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?
