False Covenant

A Widdershins Adventure, #2

I can’t tell you how thrilled I was to sit down with False Covenant! I thoroughly enjoyed Thief’s Covenant so I immediately sat down and got reacquainted with Widdershins and the goings on in Davillion. Widdershins is trying hard to live a respectable life; keep her friend’s tavern going. But the economy is rough and the only way to makes ends meet is to resort to thievery. Her life has changed so much in a short time and the loss of Genevieve is still sharp and painful. She is such a wonderful character, with her smart mouth and her knack for trouble. The world building is still top notch. The secondary characters are loveable, especially Renard. The flashes of humor are a godsend when things got really grim. The source of the evil stalking Davillion was so chilling, so inhumanly evil; I got goosebumps every time it appeared on the page. Kudos to Mr. Marmell for creating this horrifying creature! As with the first book, it was an effort to put the False Covenant down, so I carried it everywhere to eek out a few more pages whenever possible. I highly recommend this series if you love adventure, intrigue, magic and mayhem. 4 and ½ stars to this brilliant sequel!

If you thought Widdershins had it rough last time, things get a mite worse. She is trying her best to carry on without her friend, keeping the bar going. But business is bad in Davillion due to the church holding a grudge for the death of the Archbishop. The church has urged everyone to steer clear of Davillion and as a result the economy has taken a nose dive. So in order to keep the bar afloat, Widdershins has returned to thievery. Reports come in from across the city that a supernatural creature is terrorizing citizens. The people attacked are scared but relatively unharmed. Rumors spread across the city. Then something shifts and a group of children are killed brutally. The Thieves’ Guild leader asks Widdershins to look into it. When she discovers the source of this terrible evil, it might be more than even she can handle.

Book Blurb for False Covenant

A creature of the other world, an unnatural entity bent on chaos and carnage, has come to stalk the nighttime streets of the Galicien city of Davillon. There's never a good time for murder and panic, but for a community already in the midst of its own inner turmoil, this couldn't possibly have come at a worse one.

Not for Davillon, and not for a young thief who calls herself Widdershins.

It's been over half a year since the brutal murder of Archbishop William de Laurent during his pilgrimage to Davillon. And in all that time, Widdershins has truly tried her best. She's tried to take care of Genevieve's tavern and tried to make a semihonest living in a city slowly stagnating under the weight of an angry and disapproving Church. She's tried to keep out of trouble, away from the attentions of the Davillon Guard and above the secrets and schemes of the city's new bishop.

But she's in way over her head, with no idea which way to turn. The Guard doesn't trust her. The Church doesn't trust her. Her own Thieves' Guild doesn't trust her.

Too bad for everyone, then, that she and her personal god, Olgun, may be their only real weapon against a new evil like nothing the city has ever seen.
