This first book by writing duo Carysa Locke is intriguing. A Talented, mostly telepathic race. Pirates in space. Two women on the run from a dastardly evil brother. What's not to like?
Well. There's the slightly unsettling mental comparison I had of the Talented pirates to the Romani. Then there's the perennial question of what is it about sci-fi romance and its penchant for killing off almost all the women of a race. I have to admit, I often wonder just how scientifically likely this sort of thing is and it deprives me of full enjoyment of the story.
Niggling suspicions aside, I liked Sanah and Dem. I appreciated Sanah's fire and how hard she would fight for her sister and those she loves even though she doesn't think of herself as particularly capable or strong. I really liked Dem and how he went from thinking he was incapable of love to someone who thought he could be part of a real family at the end.
That said... Pirate Bound was pretty short and everything happened in a really compressed period of time. I would have liked to have seen more of Dem and his struggle with his Killer side and how that would translate to him having emotions and jealousy. I wanted more, to be better persuaded that he and Sanah would be able to make it work despite his instincts and his gut reactions to things.
Pirate Bound started with a bang. I'm looking forward to the next book to see where Carysa Locke will take us. Hopefully we'll see more of Sanah and Dem.
A desperate gamble…
Sanah would do anything to protect her little sister, even if it means taking refuge with ruthless pirates. But the psychically Talented pirates terrorizing Commonwealth space are not quite the monsters she has been led to believe. When Sanah's empathic gift shows her the truth behind the stories, she is no longer certain who the villains are in her world.
A race on the verge of extinction…
Dem’s only goal is to protect his people, especially since a deadly bio-weapon decimated their population. Only a handful of women survived, and every day is a fight to rebuild. With Sanah’s empathy and her sister’s rare ability to heal, they could be the salvation Dem and his people have been looking for.
A dangerous secret that could destroy everything…
But how can Sanah trust Dem with her life? Especially when he’d kill her if he knew the truth.
Pirate Bound is a short prequel novel to the Telepathic Space Pirates series. It is a standalone story within the series.
