Wow, this was an incredibly intense and emotional tale that is part of a three book arc which has been re-released and is called the ‘Starting Over’ series. I inadvertently read this, the second book in the series, before the first yet this did fine as a stand-alone work. The angst and nicely portrayed intensity of the relationships were compelling and distracted me from my normal dislike of flashback scenes. The gradual exposition of both the past and the present of these characters built to a dramatic crescendo that gave insight into the psyches of these characters. I thought there was a slightly jarring note toward the end as the hero abruptly reverses his firm stance on a certain issue but other than that, I was mesmerized by this story. I definitely look forward to reading the other two books in this series
“Phoenix Falling” by Mary Jo Putney is a reissue of a novel that was titled “The Spiral Path”. It is a beautifully depicted but intense novel that centers around a Hollywood couple who are on the verge of finalizing their divorce yet embark on a searingly emotional filmshoot which threatens to undermine their hard-won acceptance of the destruction of their marriage. The soon to be ex-wife/film director has no idea that her script is opening up unhealed wounds for her former lover but finds herself remembering all of the things that she fell in love with even as he grapples with the loss of practically all he loves. Just as the two finally find some measure of accord, another unexpected turn in their lives threatens to undermine all of the progress they have made and they may not be strong enough to overcome yet another hurdle.
Though they are sliding toward divorce, Raine Marlowe persuades her enigmatic superstar husband, Kenzie Scott, to play the lead in a movie she wants to produce and direct. Kenzie agrees, but without realizing how dangerously close the character’s dark secrets are to his own.
Then Kenzie's past explodes into a career destroying scandal. Like a phoenix, Kenzie had created spectacular success out of torment. Now his carefully constructed life has shattered.
When Kenzie tries to push Rainey away, she knows only she can help him come to terms with his past—and if she fails, she’ll lose the only man she’s ever loved.
