Chalice of Roses

Chalice of Roses is a quartet of novellas by Jo Beverly, Mary Jo Putney, Karen Harbaugh and Barbara Samuel that address the legend of the Holy Grail in four disparate settings.  Each author brings her inimitable style to the tale of the sacred chalice and its ability to alter momentous events in the world.  Jo Beverly has chosen a medieval setting for The Raven and the Rose that diverts a young maiden’s destiny from a nunnery as she aids a chaste knight on his quest to keep an evil duke from ruling England.  Mary Jo Putney’s The White Rose of Scotland joins a Canadian pilot of the RAF with a Scottish Guardian who has been using her Gift to work in military intelligence in the fight against Hitler.  Karen Harbaugh uses Regency England as her setting for The English Rose: Miss Templar and the Holy Grail wherein she pairs a fashionable English miss with the scion of a horse breeding family.  Barbara Samuel combines a modern American scholar with the legends of the fey in Scotland for her Eternal Rose.   Each unlikely couple is tasked with protecting the mysterious relic and threatened with the evil inherent in combining this powerful artifact with the Spear of Destiny, which was said to have pierced Christ’s side, and each pair must consummate their relationship to reaffirm their bond and strengthen their affinity with the Grail as they strive to protect it.

A very enjoyable quartet of stories that showcase each author’s ability to take the same basic legend and weave it into an enthralling tale.  Fascinatingly, each is set in the same region of the world which figures so prominently in the legends yet each author has given her own distinctive twist to make a unique mystical romance.  Ms. Harbaugh is particularly noteworthy in her ability to interject a bit of role reversal, strains of the epistolary novel and the legendary Sir Walter Scott all into one entertaining novella.
