Hi Rachel! Thanks for stopping over to chat about your latest book "Fire and Bone" as well as your life. What's your book about?

This story is a bit like Percy Jackson meets Gossip Girls in the grit and glam of LA. The main character, Sage, is not exactly a typical 18 year old girl—she lives on the streets, and has been fighting for survival in foster care for as long as she can remember. But one Halloween night she’s invited to a party in the Valley. And in a moment, her world shifts, changing forever (as parties in the Valley tend to do).

Sage soon learns that she’s not fully human. She’s actually the daughter of an ancient goddess; Brighid, the Celtic goddess of fire. At the awareness of her origin, Sage’s abilities quickly burst to life and begin to grow, forcing her to learn to gain control over them before they consume her—along with everything around her.

Enter Faelan, the mysterious Hunter who’s been chosen to get her trained up in the hurry—a job he’s not very happy about. In the mean time, the deities of the Otherworld quickly begin to vie for Sage’s allegiance, and a day of reckoning among the demigods quickly approaches. A day when she’ll decide her destiny in this strange world. A day when she’ll choose to either take on her true form as the Daughter of Fire or run from it.

What is your writing place like?

I usually write at our local Starbucks. I love the energy from the hub and bustle of the place, and plus, coffee.

If your home a place of order or chaos?

It's full of people, full of chaos, and full of life. It's home.

When it comes to your first draft, do you write via computer or notepad? or Both?

My favorite thing to work on has always been my laptop, but I also draft on my iPad sometimes now.

Do you have any kids? Has your writing inspired them to read / write?

Yes, I have four amazing, crazy kids. They're actually all teens and young adults now, ages ranging from 15 to 20. And they just get funner and funner every year!

What's next for you as an author?

Up next is a deluge of imagination, waiting just ahead. I'm for sure going to be writing more in the FIRE & BONE world, as well as finishing up a contemporary romance, and working more on my new high fantasy that's been rolling around in my head for three years.

What words of wisdom do you have?

Read wide and often!

Do you have any pets? If yes, do your pets play a part in your writing?

I definitely have pets. I'm a huge animal lover and my kids are collectors of stray things. We adopted bunnies and ended up breeding them for about twelve years. We've adopted several dogs, cats, reptiles, ducks, and rodents. We currently have one rescue pekingese, a family bred aussie, two chickens, two rescue rats, and one too-cool-for-school rescue cat.

Do you feel music has inspired your writing?

I'm not sure what I'd do if I didn't have music. Every novel I write has its own soundtrack, and before I start a project I search out the songs that seem to capture the vision of what I'm wanting to create. For FIRE & BONE, the main bands/artists were Crywolf, Nothing More, Starset, and Halsey.

Is there a book you would recommend to other authors / aspiring authors to help them with their writing?

If you're looking for books on the mechanics of writing, my three go-tos are ON WRITING by Stephen King, SELF EDITING FOR FICTION WRITERS by King and Browne, and THE FIRST FIVE PAGES by Noah Lukeman, in that order.

What genres do you write in and what inspired you to write in these genres?

I always tend to write in the fantasy genre, namely the urban fantasy genre. I'm intrigued and inspired by the idea of the beauty of the old and the grit of the new crashing together, and seeing what grows from it.

It's been wonderful having you over. Is there anything else you would like to tell the readers?

Thanks so much for reading more about me and learning more about my books!
