The Burning Page

The Invisible Library Novel, #3

“The Burning Page” by Genevieve Cogman is a wonderful whirlwind ride through alternate worlds and risky situations linked by a reverence for the printed word. I love the way elements of history and fictitious characters are tweaked and melded in these stories, and I’m enjoying getting more glimpses of characters I have become intrigued by. I think it might be possible to read this as a stand-alone story, but one would be somewhat handicapped, so my advice would be to start with the first story in the series for proper appreciation.

My fascination with the characterization of an ostensibly fantastical creature such as a dragon being used as the epitome of logic and order adds to my enjoyment of the tales. I like the twists and postulations about sequels or additional manuscripts but I have to admit that a couple of events were somewhat painful to read and I definitely sympathized with Irene. I think this series continues to get better, and although I am a little squeamish at some of the scenes, I will definitely want to come back to this world.

The third book in the ‘Invisible Library’ fantasy series continues to follow Librarian Irene after the startling events in the chaos-filled alternate Venice that seem to have left permanent effects on her associate Kai and on Peregrine Vale. The new obstacles that she encounters give her a chance to demonstrate her ability to improvise and analyze facts, but the danger to her and her allies pales in contrast to the threat to the Library itself. Irene will have to determine her priorities, no matter how high the price, although it may be paid by those she cares about.

Book Blurb for The Burning Page

Librarian spy Irene and her apprentice Kai return for another “tremendously fun, rip-roaring adventure,” (A Fantastical Librarian) third in the bibliophilic fantasy series from the author of The Masked City.

Never judge a book by its cover...

Due to her involvement in an unfortunate set of mishaps between the dragons and the Fae, Librarian spy Irene is stuck on probation, doing what should be simple fetch-and-retrieve projects for the mysterious Library. But trouble has a tendency to find both Irene and her apprentice, Kai—a dragon prince—and, before they know it, they are entangled in more danger than they can handle...

Irene’s longtime nemesis, Alberich, has once again been making waves across multiple worlds, and, this time, his goals are much larger than obtaining a single book or wreaking vengeance upon a single Librarian. He aims to destroy the entire Library—and make sure Irene goes down with it.

With so much at stake, Irene will need every tool at her disposal to stay alive. But even as she draws her allies close around her, the greatest danger might be lurking from somewhere close—someone she never expected to betray her...
