A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Jenn

Wow, this was a great read and there are two more in the series that I cannot wait to get now. This is a great book for young readers, both male and female or anyone who loves a good book with believable characters.

Ash is the main character and the reader sees everything through his eyes. The thing is though; he is young, in training to be a Knight, very inexperienced in the way of life because he has spent his entire life in this one fortress called Exmortus. He is also innocent both in the ways of how people interact with each other and wanting to believe that everyone is good.

Ash continuously compares what he would do with what really happens. He is wrong so many times it is amazing he survives. It might just be that innocence that saves him. Even the bad guys feel a little guilty when they take advantage of his belief that people are good. One guy even cries when he betrays Ash. The reader ends up feeling sorry for the bad guys because they will never be able to see the world the way Ash does. Even though he is just a knight in training he embodies all the traits people would want a knight to have.

Ash is book smart and when he leaves on his mission a few others go with him. Ash is a bit arrogant and he does consider himself to be the best leader for the group and the best person. His interior monologue will have the reader laughing several times. However, some of his fellow travelers have more experience in the world outside the walls of the fortress. There are several twists here with the group, so you will have to read it to find out.

By the end, the reader is completely behind Ash and his group of misfits. Ash is good and he wants everyone to be good, the reader will want that too.

Book Blurb for Exmortus

EXMORTUS is the story of Ash Xavier, a headstrong young knight whose faith is challenged when the long-forgotten gods of ancient civilizations send their avatar to obliterate the remote holy fortress of Exmortus Abbey --his home.

EXMORTUS, BOOK I: TOWERS OF DAWN is not your typical, run-of-the-mill fantasy. It is a work of epic dark fantasy in the mold of George R.R. Martin or Gene Wolfe, with fresh angles on the classic literary problems of growing into adulthood, sword-and-sorcery adventure, love and sex, friendship and betrayal, guilt and innocence, murder and exile, battles on land and at sea, creepy demons and unsolved mysteries coming to life at the worst possible times.

EXMORTUS: TOWERS OF DAWN will shortly be followed up by the second book of the trilogy, EXMORTUS BOOK II: TEMPLES OF MEN, and the third and final installment, EXMORTUS: TOMBS OF GODS.
